In the new episode, correspondent Blayne Alexander reports on a case from 2007.

Anita Knutson, an 18-year-old college student, was found murdered in her apartment in Minot, North Dakota, a death that left family and friends devastated.

Fifteen years later, after much uncertainty, police arrested a suspect in Anita Knutson’s case — her college roommate, Nichole Rice. Rice was found not guilty by a jury on March 26, 2025.

“Going through the trial felt like my sister died a second time,” said Knutson’s younger sister, Anna Knutson, in the episode trailer.

What is the story behind tonight’s ‘Dateline’? 

The newest episode of “Dateline” follows Anita Knutson, an 18-year-old college student who was very close with her family despite living away from home at an off-campus apartment in Minot, North Dakota.

“For some reason, it always seemed like no matter who she was talking to, she made them feel like the most important person in the world at that time,” Anna Knutson told Dateline.

When Anita Knutson’s father went to check on his daughter on June 4, 2007. There, he discovered his daughter’s body with multiple stab wounds. The murder weapon, a bloody knife, was discovered in the sink of the apartment.

On March 26, 2025, the jury returned a not guilty verdict for Nichole Rice, Anita Knutson’s college roommate.
